Day 6: Taormina Magic: Where Sicily Meets the Sky

If you’re dreaming about Italy travel that combines history, sea views, and cinematic charm, Taormina, Sicily should be at the top of your list. Today, our Coco’s tour group explored this famous coastal town — known for its views, its shopping, its incredible food, and its ancient Greek theater overlooking the bay below.

From the moment I stepped onto the hotel balcony, I could see why Taormina has been a favorite for travelers for centuries. The Ionian Sea shimmered below, framed by the cliffs and Mount Etna in the distance. The morning air smelled like citrus and espresso, and the hum of vespas on the street below reminded me — this is authentic Italy.

Exploring Taormina’s Ancient Greek Theater

Our day began with a climb up the steps to the Ancient Greek Theater, one of the most breathtaking archaeological sites in all of Italy.

Built in the 3rd century BC, this theater is unique: it’s the only Greek temple in the world that faces the bay instead of the south. The reason? To capture the sweeping view of the cliffs, the turquoise sea, and the mighty Mount Etna rising in the distance.

If you watched Netflix’s White Lotus: Season Two, this theater will look familiar — it was one of the show’s filming locations. Seeing it in person is even more magical. As we stood among the ancient ruins, the sea breeze carried the sounds of the city below and the faint buzz of a white Vespa zipping by.

Scenes from the Streets of Taormina

After exploring the theater, we strolled through the Piazza IX Aprile, one of Taormina’s most photographed spots. Street performers played soft Italian tunes while tourists sipped cappuccinos and browsed small boutiques.

Along the walk, I noticed a wall of colorful ceramic face masks, each hand-painted and full of personality — a perfect example of Sicilian artistry. Not far from there, a driver cruised by on a vintage white Vespa, a snapshot that felt straight out of a postcard.

Back at our hotel, the pool overlooked the ocean, offering the perfect place to relax before dinner. Our group gathered for a birthday toast to my mom — I wore my “Mimi Approved” shirt in her honor — and we laughed until the sun set behind the hills. These are the travel moments that stay with you.
