Tuscany Truffle Hunt in the Hills

What makes truffle hunting in Tuscany so unique?

Truffle hunting in Tuscany blends family tradition, trained dogs, and untouched countryside into one deeply authentic Italian experience.

I need to start by saying—we combined a few days here. I’ve been enjoying this group so much that I fell behind on journaling. That’s rare for me because I love sharing these moments. So here’s a look at one of our most unforgettable days in Tuscany.

Walking the Tuscan Hills with Truffle Dogs

Tuscany travel feels different when you slow down and step into real life.

We spent the day with Francesca and her family, who have lived on this land since the early 1400s. You feel the history right away. Nothing here feels staged. Their passion, their routines, and their connection to the land come through in everything they do.

Luca guided us through the rolling hills with his truffle dogs, and they were incredible to watch. They raced through fields and wooded trails, noses to the ground, fully focused on the hunt.

The scenery opened up around us—vineyards, wide pastures, and hills that stretch endlessly. Photos never quite capture it.

The farm buzzed with activity. Sheep grazed nearby. Cows moved slowly in the distance. About 30 working dogs played different roles across the property.

Some dogs search for truffles. Others herd livestock. The large white Maremmano-Abruzzese dogs protect the animals. They wear collars fitted with long spikes, designed to guard against wolves. That detail alone reminds you this is a real working farm

What do you eat after a truffle hunt in Tuscany?

After a truffle hunt, you enjoy simple, fresh food prepared right where it was sourced.

Back at the farmhouse, the meal came together naturally. We started with homemade pecorino cheese—rich, fresh, and full of flavor.

Next, they cooked eggs from that morning and topped them with the truffles we had just found. That moment defines farm-to-table.

Francesca then showed us how she makes fresh tagliatelle pasta by hand. You could see the tradition in every movement.

Meanwhile, sausages grilled over an open flame, and local olive oil finished each dish. Everything felt intentional yet effortless.

Wine flowed, conversations picked up, and the afternoon settled into something special. No rush. No pressure. Just good food, good people, and a beautiful place.

The Tuscan countryside stands out because it combines natural beauty with centuries-old farming traditions that are still alive today.

At one point, the shepherd arrived with his dogs and about a hundred sheep, moving through the property like it was just another part of the day—which, for them, it is.

Moments like that are what make this experience so real. You’re not watching Italy—you’re part of it.

People often ask me how I can come to Italy so often.

The answer is simple—there are no bad days in Italy. And this day in the Tuscan hills is exactly why.
