Day 2 Monreale’s Golden Mosaics & a Proposal to Remember
Discovering Monreale
If there’s one place in Sicily that always stops me, it’s Monreale.
Just outside Palermo, this small town sits high on a hillside. It overlooks the bay and feels peaceful and timeless.
A First Impression That Stays With You
I’ve been to Italy more times than I can count.
At first, I didn’t think much about mosaics. However, this visit changed everything for me.
As you walk through the massive bronze doors, the light shifts. Sunlight pours in and hits the gold mosaics. Suddenly, the walls begin to glow.

The artistry is so detailed that it feels alive. The eyes in each scene seem to follow you, shimmering as you move. The angels above the apse sparkle with translucent halos, and the story of creation unfolds across the ceiling in vibrant color. I’ve seen cathedrals all over Europe, but none capture the light like this one.

Every visit here reminds me of a moment I’ll never forget. Years ago, my good friend Jimmy Africano asked me to help him propose to his girlfriend Michelle. We chose the overlook in Monreale, where the entire city of Palermo spreads out below in a sea of terracotta rooftops and blue sky. I got to be the cameraman that day — capturing Jimmy’s “Will you marry me?” as church bells echoed in the distance. She said yes, of course. Two beautiful people, a perfect Sicilian view, and a memory I’ll always cherish.
Today, as our group wandered through the piazza, enjoyed gelato from the corner gelateria, and admired the Vespas lined up near the fountain, I couldn’t help but smile at how timeless it all felt. The aroma of espresso, a chef on break leaning against his blue Vespa, the hum of conversation around dinner tables — Monreale feels like a living painting.

We ended the evening back in Palermo, sharing pasta and stories with our travelers — another beautiful day in Sicily, where every detail feels like art.
