Day 11-12 Rome, Gelato, and Goodbyes – A Perfect Finale in Italy
Posted by Chuck | Destination Italy by Coco’s
Our final full day in Rome began with one of the most peaceful breakfasts I’ve ever had — seated in the Pinecone Courtyard of the Ponte Sisto Hotel, cappuccino in hand, watching the soft morning light dance on Michelangelo’s magnificent dome. It’s hard to describe the calm that comes from being in a place so full of history, yet so serene. The dome of St. Peter’s Basilica stood quietly in the distance, reminding us just how much this city has witnessed over the centuries.
And then, we stepped into that history ourselves.

We were lucky to have early VIP access to the Vatican Museums — a full hour before the crowds poured in. There’s something almost spiritual about walking those halls when they’re still and quiet. With the help of an audio guide, we moved at our own pace, soaking in masterpieces from Raphael, Botticelli, and of course, Michelangelo. His Sistine Chapel ceiling continues to leave us speechless, no matter how many times we see it. Some of us even joined the optional “Breakfast with Michelangelo” event for a truly intimate morning in the heart of Vatican City.

The afternoon gave us the freedom to rediscover Rome on our own terms. Some wandered back to the Borghese Gardens, drawn by its manicured paths and sweeping views of the city skyline. Others revisited the Colosseum, standing tall in the Roman dusk — still majestic, even after 2,000 years. I spotted one of those classic white Fiat Bug cars parked near the Forum, as if it had time-traveled straight out of the 1960s.
Back at the Ponte Sisto, we regrouped and prepared for our final evening together. And what a send-off it was.
We made our way into the heart of Trastevere, one of Rome’s oldest and most colorful neighborhoods. Its cobbled streets, golden lamplight, and soft hum of street musicians set the stage for our farewell food tour. The warmth of Italian hospitality was matched only by the food itself — handcrafted pasta sprinkled with fresh Parmesan, vibrant tomatoes, buttery pastries, and aged prosciutto laid out on long tables beneath twinkling lights. There was gelato too, of course — scooped high into cones from a bar brimming with every flavor imaginable. The gelato artist smiled as she handed us each cone, and I swear every bite tasted like childhood and summer.

Somewhere between courses, Jimmy got serenaded by a local opera singer. It was one of those moments that could only happen in Italy — spontaneous, beautiful, and utterly unforgettable.
After dinner, we walked slowly back through the Trastevere streets, full of laughter and a little sadness, knowing this journey was drawing to a close. As the Colosseum glowed in the distance, lit against the Roman night, we tried to capture it all — in photos, in stories, and in our hearts.

This morning, on Day 12, we gathered for breakfast one last time at the Ponte Sisto. Mari helped us load our bags and get to the airport, and we said our goodbyes with hugs, kisses, and promises to stay in touch. Every single person on this tour brought something special to the group — and I’m so grateful for each of you.
But here’s the thing about Italy — you never really say goodbye. You just say arrivederci.

A New Adventure Begins in 10 Days…
This isn’t the end — not by a long shot. In just 10 days, I’ll be back in Italy, leading another tour from Sicily to Puglia to the Amalfi Coast, with Rome as the grand finale once again. I’ll be sharing every step of that journey too, so be sure to follow along on this page or through our social channels.
