Day 9: From Florence to Rome via Chiusi — A Journey Through Ancient Etruria
Today’s journey took us deep into the heart of Tuscany and the ancient world, as we made our way from Florence to Rome with a fascinating stop in Chiusi, one of the hidden gems of southern Tuscany.
Before we even reached the Eternal City, we found ourselves walking in the footsteps of the Etruscans—a sophisticated civilization that thrived long before the Romans absorbed their culture. With our incredible local guide Barbara, we explored Chiusi’s quiet streets, winding underground passages, and rich archaeological history.

One of the highlights was the Labyrinth of King Porsenna, an ancient underground water system filled with twists, turns, and tales of lost royalty. It’s no wonder this place inspired legends. We also spent time at a small but captivating archaeological museum, filled with beautifully preserved artifacts unearthed from the surrounding hills. It’s easy to see how advanced the Etruscans were—from their art to their engineering.
After soaking up the mystery and charm of Chiusi, we continued south, traversing the rolling green hills of southern Tuscany, passing vineyards, cypress-lined roads, and ancient hilltop towns.

Sips, Smiles, and Sunset in Tuscany
Along the way, we stopped for a wine tasting experience that was nothing short of magical. Picture this: two couples laughing together under the Tuscan sun, glasses in hand, surrounded by grapevines heavy with fruit. The bruschetta was fresh, the pasta hand-made, and the meatballs? Absolutely unforgettable.
We even had a chance to snap some fun moments: a bright red Vespa parked near a rustic villa, a green Vespa tucked beside a vineyard path, and a warm golden hour toast with our tour group—everyone smiling, glasses raised, hearts full.

Arriving in Rome – The Eternal City
By late afternoon, we rolled into Rome, our final stop of the journey, and checked into our hotel—an elegant spot complete with its own tower view, perfect for soaking in the Roman skyline.
There’s a real sense of ease knowing we’ll be here for three nights. No packing, no rushing. Just time to explore, discover, and indulge. After days of movement, it’s a treat to unpack and settle in. Tomorrow, Rome awaits with all its grandeur.
Until then—Ciao for now!
