Matera Italy Tour: Walk Through 9,000 Years of History
What makes Matera one of the oldest cities in the world?
Matera, Italy is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on Earth—dating back over 9,000 years. Because of this, visiting Matera feels like stepping into a living timeline.
There are places in Italy that feel old… but Matera feels eternal.
This morning began with a journey that set the tone perfectly. First, we crossed into Italy by ferry, watching the coastline rise in front of us. Then, as we approached land, the anticipation built with every mile.
And suddenly—there it was.
Matera.

Stepping into the Sassi of Matera
The moment you walk through the stone archways, everything changes. Instantly, you leave modern Italy behind and enter the Sassi di Matera.
These ancient limestone homes are carved into a dramatic valley. For thousands of years, people have lived here, shaping the rock into homes, streets, and entire neighborhoods.
Today, I introduced our group to my longtime friend Enzo.
Enzo was born in these stone homes. Over time, he restored his family’s cave dwelling into something truly special. Now, it blends history with comfort—soft lighting, natural stone, and a quiet sense of permanence.
We sat together and shared espresso inside his home.
Meanwhile, I brought him a little piece of Tennessee—a single barrel Jack Daniel’s. It was a small gesture, but one that reflects the friendships built over years of traveling together.

How did Matera evolve from caves to luxury stays?
Short answer: preservation, vision, and resilience.
However, the real story is even more powerful.
Our guide Enrico walked us through Matera’s transformation. Years ago, families lived in these caves under extremely difficult conditions. Eventually, the city began to reimagine its future.
As a result, Matera evolved into something extraordinary.
Today, those same caves have become:
- Boutique Airbnbs
- 5-star cave hotels
- Stunning restaurants carved into stone
In contrast, what was once poverty is now one of Italy’s most unique luxury experiences.
You can literally sleep in a cave—yet still enjoy fine linens, modern comforts, and incredible views.
Why is Matera famous for movies and history?
Matera’s landscape feels untouched by time. Because of this, filmmakers are drawn here again and again.
In fact, it’s often used as the backdrop for biblical films. The reason is simple—it looks like ancient Jerusalem.
As we walked the narrow stone paths, climbed staircases, and paused at scenic overlooks, the entire city unfolded around us. At times, it felt surreal.
You don’t just visit Matera.
Instead, you step into it.

Simple moments that define the day
Not every highlight comes from history. Sometimes, the simplest moments stay with you the longest.
For example:
- Wandering quiet alleyways beneath linen canopies
- Discovering fresh-baked bread resting on a small table
- Stopping for gelato (more than once, of course)
- Sitting down together for a long, relaxed dinner
Meanwhile, conversations flowed, laughter filled the air, and strangers became friends.
These are the moments that matter.
What does a day in Matera feel like?
A day in Matera feels slower, deeper, and more intentional.
You move differently here. Instead of rushing, you notice the details. Then, you begin to connect—with the place, with the people, and with each other.
By the end of the day, something shifts.
Sitting around the table together, sharing wine and stories, it no longer feels like a tour.
Instead, it feels like family.
