Day 3 – Venice: Gondola Boatyard, Ride & Classical Concert
Venice is a city unlike any other, and today it felt like we peeled back another layer of its magic. By now, we’ve traveled on four different kinds of boats in just three days—a true Venetian initiation! Yesterday we explored the Po River Delta with our wonderful guide Sara and Captain Sandro, and it was so good to see them again. That nature tour was such a unique experience, far from the usual tourist trail, and it gave us a glimpse into an important part of Italy that so many people overlook.
But today was all about one of Venice’s greatest symbols: the gondola.

A Visit to a Gondola Boatyard
Our morning started at one of the only two active gondola boatyards left in Venice. Walking into this workshop felt like stepping into a different era. Rows of sleek black gondolas leaned against the walls like polished cats, ready to pounce on the canals. We learned about the craftsmanship: every gondola is hand-shaped from multiple types of wood, carefully balanced, and polished to a shine that even your grandmother’s silverware would envy.
We even got to see a pair of worn-out gondolier shoes—clearly proof that rowing these boats takes dedication (and maybe a bit of masochism). The stack of oars in the corner looked almost ceremonial, like a gallery of wooden wands waiting for their wizard..

Gliding Through the Canals
Then it was time for the real deal: our gondola ride. Sliding into the boat, the city unfolded around us like a storybook. Chuck couldn’t stop grinning—honestly, I think he was considering quitting life back home just to become a professional gondolier. We floated past marbled palaces, tiny bridges, and curious locals peeking out of their windows, all the while trying not to look like complete tourists (spoiler: we failed gloriously).
There’s a special kind of magic in seeing Venice from the water: every reflection, every ripple makes the city feel alive. And if the gondola tips slightly to one side? Well, that’s just part of the adventure.

An Afternoon of Wandering
After the ride, we had the afternoon at leisure. The local advice is simple: “get lost.” So we did. And wow, Venice rewards the wanderer. Narrow alleys open into secret squares, pastry shops beckon with irresistible aromas, and somehow, every turn feels like a movie scene.
We did make a stop at St. Mark’s Square, of course, marveling at the marbled palaces and gazing over the Bridge of Sighs—a perfect spot for dramatic sighs of our own. Along the way, I even ran into my previous tour guide, who had driven hours just to say hi. Venice is small, but apparently also very good at matchmaking for tour friends.

An Evening with Vivaldi
As evening fell, we stepped into a Venetian concert hall to hear Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. There’s something almost cheeky about sitting in a hall where the composer himself probably stomped around centuries ago, and then hearing the music that made him famous. The orchestra breathed life into every note, and for a moment, the city itself seemed to hum along—the lapping water, the distant bells, the occasional cough from someone who clearly thought they were auditioning.
It was the perfect crescendo to a day that blended tradition, adventure, and friendship.
Reflections
Today was more than sightseeing—it was about living Venice. From the workshop filled with oars and old shoes to floating along canals and ending with Vivaldi, every moment felt both timeless and ridiculously fun. Venice doesn’t just invite you to explore—it practically dares you to fall in love with it.
And honestly? I think we’re all doing a pretty good job of that.
If you’ve ever dreamed of exploring Italy with a personal guide, now’s your chance! I lead trips every spring and fall—just before and after the high season—so you get all the magic of Italy without the crowds.
