Umbria’s Hidden Treasures: Assisi Olive Oil Traditions
What makes Umbria one of Italy’s most authentic regions?
Umbria stands out for its deep-rooted traditions, family-owned farms, and untouched landscapes—offering travelers a true taste of Italy beyond the crowds.
Walking Through Assisi’s Sacred History
Today, we stepped into the heart of Umbria and explored Assisi—one of Italy’s most meaningful towns.
From the moment we arrived, everything felt calm. Instead of rushing, Assisi invites you to slow down and take it all in.
We began at the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi. Here, history and art come together in a powerful way. The frescoes tell stories from centuries ago. However, they still feel alive today.
As we walked through the stone streets, I shared a few hidden spots along the way. For example, if you came up the hill with me, you saw St. Francis’s childhood home.
In that moment, his story becomes real.
You can imagine him standing there, choosing to give up everything. Not just wealth—but comfort and expectation. Because of that, Assisi stays with you long after you leave.

What Is a Traditional Umbrian Home-Hosted Lunch Like?
A home-hosted lunch in Umbria is warm, generous, and deeply personal. In other words, it’s not a restaurant—it’s an invitation into someone’s life.
Today, we experienced one of the best.
We visited the Albarello family farmhouse. Right away, Joe, Lucia, and their boys welcomed us like family.
Soon, the table began to fill:
- Fresh, local ingredients
- Handmade courses, one after another
- Unlimited local wine
- Stories, laughter, and even a little entertainment
Meanwhile, Lucia’s tiramisu was unforgettable.
Because of this, meals like this become the highlight of the trip. They are not staged or scripted. Instead, they are real moments shared together.

Why Is Carletti Olive Oil So Special?
Carletti olive oil is special because it preserves centuries-old methods—hand-picking, cold pressing, and natural resting—to create unmatched flavor and quality.
In all my years traveling Italy and sourcing products for our market, I’ve never come across anything like it.
The Carletti family has been on their land for over 550 years. Producing olive oil since the 1700s. And they still do it the old way.
Here’s what makes it different:
- Olives are hand-picked, often by women for a gentler touch
- Trees—some over 600 years old—grow on steep hills (no machines)
- No vibration harvesting—everything is done by hand
- Olives must be processed within 24 hours
- Small-batch pressing: about 300 kg at a time
- Each press takes 90 minutes using intermittent methods
- Oil is left to naturally rest, not filtered
- Stored in cans to protect from sunlight
And yes—you’ll even see the old rolling stones used to mash the olives.
Before electricity? Donkeys powered those stones.
That’s not a story. That’s history still being lived.
At Coco’s, we import pallets of this oil—and we are the only importer of Carletti olive oil in the United States.
