Day 1 Overnight Flight
After we get to our hotel and freshen up, I will take you on a street food journey. Fried Rice balls Arancini, fresh juices,
Sfincione, Pezzi de Rosticceria, Pane con le milza, great desserts and of course, cannoli. And while we are walking I will
point out the hidden treasures of Palermo.
Day 10 Sorrento - Amalfi Coast Drive - Minori
After breakfast we savor time in this lovely seaside town of
Sorrento. Then we begin our adventure traversing the
breathtaking Amalfi Coast and stop in the charming town of Amalfi
and spend time exploring its striking provincial beauty before
heading to Minori where we sample regional specialties at a
family-owned limoncello factory. Later, we stop for a traditional
Italian afternoon break at a local café and pastry shop. Tonight
enjoy an evening of leisure and I will help guide you to more sites
and restaurants .
DAY 2 Palermo, Sicily - Tour officially begins with our first local guide in the capital of
Sicily. Palermo is a pulsating city with a lot of sights, sounds, tastes and aroma for all of
your senses to take in. Tonight we join your fellow travelers for a welcome dinner
featuring authentic Sicilian cuisine.
DAY 3 Palermo - Monreale
Todays’ excursion we acquaint ourselves with Palermo’s many lovely squares - the Quattro
Canti, Piazza Pretoria and Piazza Bellini and discover an exotic mix of Moorish, Norman and
Spanish Baroque architecture along the way. We see the Palace of the Normans, La
Martorana church, and the cathedral that houses the Imperial Crown of Constance of
Aragon. In the nearby town of Monreale we visit a 12th-century cathedral with its dazzling
interior of multicolored marbles, paintings, mosaics and cloisters. The remainder of the day
is yours and I will help you get to what interests you: shopping, people watching at a café,
museums, leisurely walks or you can simply take some time to relax.
DAY 4 Palermo - Agrigento - Giardini Naxos
Today we travel over the countryside’s rolling hills, past peaceful
farmland toward the town of Agrigento to explore one of the most
important archaeological sites in the world, the stunning Valley of the
Temples (UNESCO Site), where you’ll get an up-close view of the
temples of Juno, Concordia, Hercules and Jupiter. We continue on to
Giardini Naxos, the “Garden of Sicily” for our 3-night stay.
DAY 5 Giardini Naxos - Taormina
We visit beautiful Taormina with its charming atmosphere, historic
monuments and flowering gardens. Alongside an expert local guide, we
see Corso Umberto, view the bountiful public gardens and marvel at the
city’s well-preserved Greek theatre. Later we have some free time to
relax or independently explore.
DAY 6 Giardini Naxos - Catania - Mt. Etna
Next we journey to vibrant Catania where it’s your choice! Join a local guide to
visit the cathedral and view other iconic sights of this historic Baroque city
(UNESCO Site); then witness the daily spectacle of bartering for fresh fish and
produce at the local market -OR- explore the Museo dello Sbarco (Allied
Landing Museum), an emotionally moving museum dedicated to the Allied
troops who landed on the southern coast in 1943. Later we gather to discover
the impressive Mt. Etna Volcano National Park where a local expert introduces
you to the park’s spectacular landscapes sculpted by nature. Then we return to
our hotel for a relaxing evening.
DAY 7: Giardini Naxos - Matera
Our next adventure is to Messina for a fun ferry ride to Villa San Giovanni on Italy’
s mainland. Have your cameras ready as we pass through unspoiled, Calabria
into the Basilicata region where we make a stop at a fantastic local winery.
There we will be guided on a walk through the cellars and vineyards before
sampling wines during a special tasting. Tonight I have planned for you regional
cuisine in the winery’s own “agriturismo” restaurant.
Day 8 Matera - Alberobello
We visit “Sassi di Matera,” an ancient settlement of carved cave dwellings. Our
local guide shares the history of the site and reasons why it has recently caught
the eye of many film producers. We continue to a local shop for a chance to
sample some regional produce that when jarred we ship to Coco’s Italian Market
We get free time in Matera to browse the boutiques or taste the local cuisine
before heading to the mystical town of Alberobello. Marvel at some of the town’s
most uniquely built homes known as Trulli, and their distinct, cone-shaped roofs.
Day 9 Matera - Vietri Sul Mare - Sorrento Peninsula
One of the most breathtaking areas of Italy: Campania and the Bay of Naples. We
stop in Vietri Sul Mare, the “gateway to the Amalfi Coast,” for time to leisurely
explore. Here, generations of inhabitants have been producing precious painted
pottery, representing stories of their daily life. You will admire the 17th-century
church of St. John the Baptist with its beautiful ceramic dome. Once we arrive at
the Sorrento Peninsula just sit back and take in the magical views.
Day 11 Sorrento - Pompeii - Rome
Drive along the Bay of Naples to the famous ruins of Pompeii, at the
foothills of Mount Vesuvius. Our local guide gives us an in-depth
view of this remarkable archaeological site where you’ll become
immersed in history as you explore the preserved buildings of this
2,000 year-old Roman town. Later we travel to Rome and celebrate
the end of your journey with a delicious dinner of typical Roman
Day 12 Rome -
At breakfast in the hotel we will share email addresses with your new friends as our tour comes to a close but it's the beginning of beautiful
