Day 2 Monreale’s Golden Mosaics & a Proposal to Remember
If there’s one place in Sicily that never fails to stop me in my tracks, it’s Monreale. Just outside Palermo, perched on the hillside overlooking the bay, this small town holds one of the most extraordinary treasures in all of Italy — the Cathedral of Monreale.
I’ve been to Italy more times than I can count, and to be honest, early on I didn’t give much thought to mosaics. But this is the day that changed my mind for good. Walking through those massive bronze doors, sunlight floods the cathedral and hits the gold mosaics — and suddenly the walls seem to glow from within. The prince who built this cathedral spared no expense. He brought in the finest artists from across nations and faiths, caring nothing for religion, only for craftsmanship. The result is a masterpiece that transcends time: layer upon layer of gold and glass, creating a depth and radiance that’s impossible to describe.

The artistry is so detailed that it feels alive. The eyes in each scene seem to follow you, shimmering as you move. The angels above the apse sparkle with translucent halos, and the story of creation unfolds across the ceiling in vibrant color. I’ve seen cathedrals all over Europe, but none capture the light like this one.

Every visit here reminds me of a moment I’ll never forget. Years ago, my good friend Jimmy Africano asked me to help him propose to his girlfriend Michelle. We chose the overlook in Monreale, where the entire city of Palermo spreads out below in a sea of terracotta rooftops and blue sky. I got to be the cameraman that day — capturing Jimmy’s “Will you marry me?” as church bells echoed in the distance. She said yes, of course. Two beautiful people, a perfect Sicilian view, and a memory I’ll always cherish.
Today, as our group wandered through the piazza, enjoyed gelato from the corner gelateria, and admired the Vespas lined up near the fountain, I couldn’t help but smile at how timeless it all felt. The aroma of espresso, a chef on break leaning against his blue Vespa, the hum of conversation around dinner tables — Monreale feels like a living painting.

We ended the evening back in Palermo, sharing pasta and stories with our travelers — another beautiful day in Sicily, where every detail feels like art.
